<p>Daniel Keane co-founded Predict Ecology with his business partner Dr Helen Mason in 2019. In the early part of his career, Keane worked as an environmental officer in metalliferous hardrock mining. He went on to become a biological consultant and ecologist while honing his botany skills – a field that was part of his undergraduate studies.</p>



<p>As a consultant he worked in most of Australia, mapping powerline corridors and linear infrastructure like gas pipelines. He did a lot of work in Papua New Guinea, and even the Southern Highlands for the Exxon Mobil gas pipeline. His work as biological consultant and ecologist in mining included doing a lot of ecological surveys. Later he started working for small consulting firms based in far north Queensland working on mine closure and rehabilitation.&nbsp;</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Blockchain solutions to environmental and ecological IoT challenges</h4>



<p>Throughout his consulting career, Keane got a sense of the practical challenges of mine closure and realised that blockchain could solve a lot of the problems.</p>



<p>‘To be successful in my line of work, data security and auditability framework are crucial.’&nbsp;</p>



<p>Keane explains the process of mine closure. The first step after the initial discovery of a mine site is to ascertain the volume of valuable metals or minerals present on the site. Researchers and scientists would take samples, record information, and go off to model the probabilities. All of this data gets filed and sent to the lenders or the investors to apply for funding.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Once funding is secured, the mining operator would start building a plant and a concentrator to redeem the material out of the ground. They’ll happily operate for anything from five to one hundred years. All of that time, they would be doing environmental and social monitoring to look at things like the water and air quality, the social impact, the royalties, accidents like a spill on the ground, and how many vehicle hours it took to dig this mineral out of the ground. There’s a whole plethora of complexity to the monitoring and management.</p>



<p>The system tends to work very well while the mine is operating and making money. However, when the time comes to close the site, often the people who have been involved in the project close up and leave. As a result, much of this corporate knowledge becomes inaccessible.</p>



<p>‘I was always really perturbed by the idea that I didn’t have a single continuous record to know what happened at a particular location,’ Keane says.</p>



<p>If you take an example of a mine operating for 30 years, you might have had 10, 15, 20, or even 30 engineers or scientists. As different people file things differently, the records could be sketchy and incomplete.</p>



<p>‘I had no way of knowing with accuracy what had happened at a particular location. What was the forest like at this particular location 10 or 20-years ago? What do I have to rebuild? What were the cultural and social dynamics? What was the land ownership?’</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Predict Ecology’s BSV-based solution</h3>



<p>Keane saw the value of blockchain for offering a way to immutably record information while ensuring its integrity and security.</p>



<p>‘Blockchain will ensure that people like me can come help rebuild, repair or make these sites safe, being informed by what’s come before.’</p>



<p>At present, Keane is working with Metastreme’s Paul Chiari to integrate Predict Ecology with the BSV blockchain. They’re building an Android mobile application that will let users collect field-data and write it to the BSV blockchain with encrypted transactions using Metastreme. Down the road, Keane wants to tokenise the app and provide full integration with SPV.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">A biodiversity project on the BSV blockchain</h4>



<p>As a pilot project, Keane and his team have used publicly available tree data from the Geelong area of Melbourne, Australia to explore biodiversity.</p>



<p>’We did some calculations and aggregations on the data and put it on-chain. That got me to thinking, what about citizen science? People could download an app on their phone and go out and map all sorts of things, and be rewarded for their work.’</p>



<p>While the biodiversity data refers to the diversity of trees that occur in the Geelong area, the same application could be used to collect any other type of data. It could be water quality data. It could be liveability. It could be photographs. It could be anything you can possibly imagine.</p>



<p>By running the app on BSV, you could also incentivise participation of high quality data contributors. If you take the example of trees, you could attract professors of botany to run around with their smartphone by offering them a lucrative incentive per data point.</p>



<p>‘A professor of botany would theoretically produce far better identifications than John Doe off the street. It’s not to say John Doe shouldn’t be rewarded, but he shouldn’t be rewarded as much as a professor of botany who always gets it right,’ Keane explains.</p>



<p>And that’s how you get amazingly talented people out of the woodwork and contributing.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Environmental monitoring and valuing of natural capital</h4>



<p>In the context of environmental projects, individual trees can be tokenised and all subsequent aggregated and emergent properties can be referenced. Carbon storage can be tokenised and treated with an assurance that there’s no double spending. Water quality and biodiversity improvements can be quantified, tokenised and traded – tokens backed by a physical asset and physical data.</p>



<p>The data that demonstrates these assets can be referenced, validated and audited all in one place, fulfilling the six v’s – volume, velocity, variety, veracity, value and validity – and creating a combined data set of natural capital on the BSV ledger. This allows the data to be indexed and retrieved in a self-serve, pay-per-view framework open to investors, citizens, researchers and modellers worldwide.</p>


Case Study – Predict Ecology


<h3 class="wp-block-heading">A robust and scalable blockchain transaction engine designed to be simple yet capable of supporting the most demanding applications</h3>



<p><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/paul-chiari-48806615/?originalSubdomain=au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Founder of MetaStreme and WeatherSV, Paul Chiari</a> has worked in the IT industry for around 30 years. Starting out in corporate IT, most of his career focussed on network and systems admin and engineering and IT project management. 20 years ago he moved to Northern Australia and started his own IT consulting business. It grew significantly along with Australia’s booming mining sector, which only started slowing down after the downturn in commodity markets in about 2012.</p>



<p>Chiari has had an interest in the idea of digital cash since the days of eGold. While consulting for industries like agriculture and mining, he became intrigued with how a public blockchain could help create more efficient business practises and introduce the transparency that’s been lacking in some of these industries.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">MetaStreme’s BSV-based application</h4>



<p>MetaStreme makes it easier for parties to collect data, whether it be from an application, a database, or an IoT device and push that data onto the blockchain.</p>



<p>‘You can forget about building the transaction, adding fees on the transactions, and all that sort of business. You simply make the funds available for transactions and MetaStreme takes care of the rest,’ Chiari declares. All MetaStreme requires from their clients is the data required for the transaction. The rest is taken care of.</p>



<p>Chiari is enthusiastic about the potential BSV’s high transaction processing volumes unlocks.</p>



<p>‘We recently set a new record of 5,100 transactions per second, up from our previous record of 3,800 transactions per second. We could go heaps faster, but we have to keep our levels cost effective.’</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">MetaStreme in a real-world scenario</h4>



<p>Although Chiari’s <a href="http://weathersv.app" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">WeatherSV</a> project is only a proof of concept, he extrapolates how the same concept can be applied to many other industries.</p>



<p>‘Let’s think of a farmer working within the agricultural industry. The farmer could collect data about all parts of their operation, from the water quality, the runoff of their paddocks, and fertiliser and pesticide use. All of this information would be valuable to the farmer to optimise their operation. But at the same time, the water quality data and the effects of the runoff will have a wider impact.’</p>



<p>‘In the North Queensland area where we live, the Great Barrier Reef is just off our coast. There’s a number of bodies from the government and the Barrier Reef Marine Authorities who want to install systems to record some of the very same data that’s important to the farmer. For example, they want to measure agricultural runoff into the water catchment areas to try and measure the effect it has on the Reef.’</p>



<p>One bit of data could be valuable to multiple stakeholders. Chiari envisions an online market where farmers can contribute their data and interested parties can purchase that data, removing the need to duplicate the network of IoT devices to capture the same data.&nbsp;</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">The BSV blockchain for better access to better quality data</h4>



<p>Chiari views the BSV’s incentive system as the key to bringing data out of silos and unleashing its potential.&nbsp;</p>



<p>‘As with any data-based project, having a few bits won’t help you much. But if you can integrate a vast range of data points and cross-reference them with other information – like water quality, weather, even space-weather data – you’ll be much better off when looking for trends and patterns, and coming up with legitimate analysis.’</p>



<p>Chiari and his team built WeatherSV as a standalone application to function as a proof of concept, but it soon became very popular.&nbsp;</p>



<p>‘We were quickly doing 150,000 transactions a day. That may not seem like a big deal, but it proved that BSV is the system that would scale to meet our demand.’</p>


Case Study – MetaStreme


<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Creating bespoke solutions connecting businesses to the world’s most scalable blockchain</h3>



<p><a href="https://www.elas.co" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Elas Digital</a> creates the token protocols and applications that businesses need to migrate onto a blockchain infrastructure. We spoke to Elas Digital’s founder, <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/search/results/all/?keywords=brendan%20lee&amp;origin=RICH_QUERY_TYPEAHEAD_HISTORY&amp;position=0&amp;searchId=0a0364f9-e05c-492d-a02a-82aa6f880bd0&amp;sid=Vw%3A" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brendan Lee</a> about how their business is using the BSV blockchain as foundation for their projects.</p>



<p>Their service is focussed on building whatever tools customers need to use the blockchain, without having to understand anything about blockchain technology themselves. In a government context, they could replace the printing presses that make the coins and print the banknotes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Elas Digital helped one of their customers, <a href="https://advance.qld.gov.au/brisbane-company-using-bitcoin-ledger-solve-real-world-business-challenges" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Amleh Gold, to tokenise gold</a> so you can track back through the history of a token until you see where it was created. You can look at the minting record, which contains a signature, and see that the parent transaction of that node is the Amleh ledger node. That way you can tell without a doubt that you’re dealing with a legitimate token.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">What does the blockchain integration process look like for a business that makes use of Elas Digital’s services?&nbsp;</h4>



<p>Lee explains that integration would be quite different for each customer: ‘It would depend on what they’re trying to achieve, and what aspect of their business they’re trying to bring onto the public ledger.’</p>



<p>Elas Digital designs customer solutions to match the service their customer would like to provide.</p>



<p>‘For a large company that delivers several different services, there might be several different things that we need to build. To use the example of our project with the national government of Tuvalu, we’ve proposed creating a single <a href="https://youtu.be/FdwGZo9chg8" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Metanet ledger</a>, <a href="https://youtu.be/-hLVA8ROd_4" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the Tuvalu National Digital Ledger</a>.’ Within that ledger, there will be at least half a dozen separate independent projects that each does something quite different. Elas Digital will design each one almost completely separately based on its own intent.’</p>



<p>They started the project off with one of the simplest components –&nbsp; a citizenship application process. There are a lot of people who have Tuvaluan heritage but are not citizens. Tuvalu wants to start offering them the ability to become citizens.</p>



<p>‘What we do is to take the existing process, which is paperwork heavy and takes around three months, and cut it down to less than a week. The goal is to complete the process in two or three days,’ Lee says.</p>



<p>To make this possible, Elas is building an application to pull in all the required documents and data and attach it to a token.</p>



<p>Another aspect of Tuvalu’s national administration that could be placed on a blockchain infrastructure is their fishing licensing. The Tuvaluan government generates a lot of revenue through selling licences to fish in their waters. Pacific island nations employ a process where they sell the right to fish on particular days. Boats can bid for the right to fish on a particular day in a specific zone. ‘It would be very easy to streamline this process on blockchain so the auction happens through the BSV blockchain and the licences are issued on-chain,’ Lee explains.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">What does Elas Digital’s future product roadmap look like in terms of blockchain integration projects?</h4>



<p>Elas Digital is building out the systems required to take entire government systems like laws and codify them on-chain with a Metanet structure. Lee sees it as a way to radically improve the efficiency of government and make it more transparent.</p>



<p>‘We’ll also be able to turn it from a representative democracy into a direct democracy where all citizens participate in decision-making, not just in electing a representative. This would be a giant leap towards the true intent of democracy.’</p>


Case Study – Elas Digital


<p>The opportunities around IoT and big data are huge. Looking at IoT alone, there are currently more than nine billion connected devices, which is estimated to grow to about 14 billion by 2024. Over this time, we can expect revenue to grow from about 200 billion dollars today to around 500 billion dollars.</p>



<p>The BSV blockchain’s public ledger, combined with its support of micro transactions, tokens and smart contracts, stands to revolutionise IoT applications and how data is collected, valued, shared and utilised.</p>
